How laser hair removal actually works
Laser hair removal targets melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. A precise wavelength of light passes through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in each hair follicle. That absorbed energy converts to heat and damages the follicle's growth structure — which over a series of sessions, dramatically reduces or stops new hair growth.
Two facts that surprise most first-time clients:
- Hair grows in cycles, and only follicles in the active anagen phase respond to laser. At any given moment, roughly 20–30% of the hairs in any area are in that phase. That's why one session can't catch them all and why six to eight sessions, spaced weeks apart, are the norm.
- Light skin and dark hair historically gave the best results because of the contrast. Modern systems with longer wavelengths (Nd:YAG, diode) safely treat darker skin tones as well — provided the operator knows how to adjust settings. We'll come back to this.
Who it's for — and why skin tone matters
Laser hair removal is approved for clients across the full Fitzpatrick skin scale (Types I–VI), but only if the device matches the skin tone. The Fitzpatrick scale is a 6-step classification of how skin responds to sun exposure: Type I burns easily and never tans, Type VI is deeply pigmented and rarely burns. Older alexandrite-only systems were not safe for Types V–VI because the laser couldn't tell the difference between melanin in the hair and melanin in the surrounding skin — leading to burns and pigmentation changes.
Modern systems (such as the Nd:YAG used at our Marietta studio) use longer wavelengths that pass through skin pigment without absorbing it, targeting only the deeper melanin in the follicle. This is what makes "painless laser hair removal" safe for every skin tone we treat.
If a previous med spa told you laser hair removal isn't for your skin tone, that may have been true with their device — but it likely isn't true today. Ask any clinic what wavelength they use and whether their system is FDA-cleared for Fitzpatrick I–VI before booking.
"Painless" is real — here's why
Most first-time clients tense up expecting waxing-level pain. The actual sensation is closer to a brief, warm rubber-band snap. Three things make that possible:
- Integrated contact cooling: the laser handpiece chills the skin a few degrees right before each pulse, dulling the heat sensation.
- Adjustable fluence: a trained provider tunes the energy level to the highest setting your skin tolerates without discomfort, then dials it up gradually across sessions.
- Speed: each pulse covers a small patch in milliseconds. A full underarm treatment is usually under 5 minutes; a full-leg session is around 30.
Sensitive areas (upper lip, bikini line) feel a touch more intense than thicker-skinned zones (legs, back), but almost no one rates the experience above a 3 out of 10.
Before your first visit: a 2-week prep checklist
Preparation is straightforward but matters more than people realize. Mistakes here are the #1 reason for sub-par results.
- 4 weeks before: stop waxing, plucking, threading, and depilatory creams in the treatment area. The laser needs an intact follicle to target.
- 2 weeks before: avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanner on the area. Tanned skin has more surface melanin, which forces the provider to dial down the energy and reduces results.
- 1 week before: stop retinoids, AHAs, and exfoliating actives in the treatment area. They thin the skin barrier and increase post-treatment irritation.
- 12–24 hours before: shave the area cleanly. Long hair above the skin actually reduces effectiveness because the laser energy gets absorbed by the visible hair instead of reaching the follicle root.
- Day of: arrive with clean, dry skin. No lotions, deodorant, perfume, or makeup on the area to be treated.
If you're prone to cold sores and getting your upper lip done, ask your provider about pre-treating with antiviral medication 24 hours ahead of time — laser pulses can occasionally trigger a flare-up.
During your appointment: step-by-step
Your first appointment usually runs 15 to 60 minutes depending on the area treated. Here's what to expect at our Marietta studio:
- Consultation and skin analysis — your provider reviews your medical history, photographs the treatment area, and confirms your Fitzpatrick type. Tell them about any medications, recent sun exposure, or pregnancy plans.
- Test patch (first session only) — if there's any uncertainty about how your skin will respond, a few low-energy pulses are placed in a small area to confirm settings.
- Eye protection — you'll wear opaque safety goggles for the entire treatment.
- Cooling gel or contact cooling — applied just before the laser passes over the area.
- Treatment — overlapping pulses cover the entire area. The smell of singed hair is normal and expected.
- Soothing — after the laser, a cool compress and a calming gel or aloe-based product are applied. Mild pinkness or warmth (similar to a sunburn) is normal and usually fades within hours.
Right after: what's normal
Within the first few hours, expect:
- Redness and slight swelling around individual follicles, often described as "goose bump"-like. This usually fades within 1 to 24 hours.
- Mild warmth in the treated area — like a light sunburn — for up to 24 hours.
- No immediate hair loss. Hair won't fall out at the appointment. Over the next 7 to 14 days, treated hairs will shed on their own, often during regular showering.
What's not normal: blistering, scabbing, lasting darker pigmentation, or bright redness past 48 hours. If you see any of those, call us — they're rare but treatable.
Results timeline and number of sessions
Realistic expectations for laser hair removal in 2026:
- Sessions 1–2: patchy hair loss visible 2 to 3 weeks after each treatment. Hairs grow back finer.
- Sessions 3–4: noticeably thinner regrowth across the area. Some patches remain hair-free between sessions.
- Sessions 5–6: most clients see 70–90% reduction in hair density. Remaining hairs are typically very fine and slow-growing.
- Maintenance: a touch-up session 1 to 2 times per year keeps results stable for most clients. Hormonal areas (face, lower belly) often need slightly more frequent maintenance because new hair growth can be triggered by hormone shifts.
Sessions are spaced based on the area's growth cycle: 4–6 weeks apart for face and underarms, 6–8 weeks apart for body, and 8–10 weeks apart for legs and back. Going too soon doesn't speed up results — most follicles haven't cycled back into anagen yet.
Aftercare and what to avoid
- For 24 hours: no hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, or strenuous workouts. Heat agitates the freshly treated follicles.
- For 48 hours: no swimming pools (chlorine) or deodorant on treated underarms.
- For 1 week: no exfoliating products, retinoids, or active acids on the area. No waxing or plucking — ever, between sessions.
- For 2 weeks: avoid direct sun exposure on the treated area. Use SPF 30+ daily, even if the area is normally covered.
- Anytime: shaving between sessions is encouraged — it doesn't affect results.

Frequently asked questions
How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?
Most clients need 6 to 8 sessions, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, to achieve 70–90% hair reduction. Hair only responds to laser during its active growth phase, so multiple visits are required to catch every follicle.
Is laser hair removal safe for darker skin tones?
Yes, when the right technology is used. At our Marietta studio we use a skin-tone-sensitive system FDA-cleared for all Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI. Older alexandrite-only devices were unsafe for darker skin; modern Nd:YAG and diode systems are not.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most clients describe the sensation as a brief rubber-band snap or warm pinch. Built-in contact cooling on modern devices brings the experience close to painless for most areas. Sensitive zones (upper lip, bikini) feel slightly more intense but remain well-tolerated.
Can I get laser hair removal while pregnant?
We recommend pausing treatment during pregnancy. There's no evidence laser hair removal harms a pregnancy, but pregnancy hormones shift hair growth patterns enough that results during this window aren't predictable. Most clients resume 6 to 8 weeks postpartum.
How long does the appointment take?
Upper lip is about 5 minutes. Underarms or bikini are 10–15 minutes. Half leg is around 20 minutes; full leg is 30–45 minutes. Your first visit will run 15 minutes longer to allow for consultation and a test patch.
What's the cost of laser hair removal in Marietta?
Pricing varies by body area and series length. Single sessions start around $60 for the upper lip and scale up by area. Most clients save by purchasing a package of 6 sessions, which is discounted. CareCredit financing is available.
