Hydrafacial vs. VI Peel: a Marietta esthetician's honest comparison
Side-by-side: what each treatment actually does, who it's for, what it costs, the downtime that nobody warns you about, and when it makes sense to combine them.

The 30-second answer
If you want a radiant, hydrated glow with zero downtime — Hydrafacial. Perfect before an event. If you want to fade hyperpigmentation, soften acne scarring, or reset uneven tone — VI Peel. Expect 5–7 days of visible peeling, then noticeably better skin.
They're not really competitors. They solve different problems. Most of my regulars use both — strategically, on different timelines.
How each treatment works
Hydrafacial
Hydrafacial is a multi-step facial performed with a patented vortex device. The handpiece does four things in sequence: cleanses, exfoliates, extracts impurities (via gentle suction), and infuses serums into the skin. The mechanism is mechanical and topical — nothing penetrates deeply enough to cause peeling or irritation. The whole thing takes 30–45 minutes, including the optional LED therapy add-on most clients choose.
Result: skin is hydrated, pores are visibly smaller for several days, and complexion looks brighter. The "Hydrafacial glow" is real but temporary — about 5–7 days at peak, then a gradual return to baseline. Maintenance every 4 weeks keeps it consistent.
VI Peel
VI Peel is a medical-grade chemical peel originally developed for melasma and hyperpigmentation. It uses a synergistic blend of TCA, salicylic acid, phenol, retinoic acid, and vitamin C to penetrate the upper-to-mid dermis. Application takes about 15 minutes; you leave the studio with the solution still on your skin and rinse it off at home that evening or the next morning.
Days 2–3, you'll feel slightly tight. Days 3–5, the visible peeling begins — fine flaking that gradually becomes obvious sheet-like shedding. Days 5–7, the skin underneath emerges brighter, smoother, and noticeably more even-toned. Most clients see the maximum result two weeks post-peel.
Cost compared
At Majspa Aesthetics in Marietta:
- Hydrafacial Signature — from $199
- Hydrafacial Deluxe (signature + booster of choice + LED) — from $249
- Hydrafacial Platinum (deluxe + lymphatic drainage) — from $299
- VI Peel (single treatment) — typically $300–$400
- VI Peel series of 3 — package-discounted
If budget is your deciding factor, the math leans Hydrafacial for one-off events and VI Peel for sustained correction (3-peel series spread over 12 weeks usually delivers more durable results than 3 Hydrafacials).
Downtime compared
This is where most clients get surprised, so I want to be very clear:
- Hydrafacial: truly no downtime. You can wear makeup the same evening. Some clients have brief mild redness for 1–2 hours that fades quickly.
- VI Peel: 5–7 days of visible peeling. Days 2–3 you look slightly tight; days 4–5 the peeling is noticeable from across a room; days 6–7 you're shedding the last of it. This is not skin you want to bring to a meeting or event.
The single biggest mistake I see Marietta clients make: booking a VI Peel too close to a wedding or vacation. VI Peel needs at least 10 clear days before any event you'd want to look glowing for.
Who each is best for
Choose Hydrafacial if you want to:
- Look radiant for an event, photoshoot, wedding, or interview
- Improve hydration and texture without commitment to a series
- Reduce surface-level dullness or congested pores
- Maintain skin between more aggressive treatments
- Try a med spa for the first time — it's the gentlest entry point
Choose VI Peel if you want to:
- Fade hyperpigmentation, sun damage, or melasma
- Soften acne scarring or active acne
- Resurface skin that hasn't responded to topicals or facials
- Reset tone after a summer of sun exposure
- See significant before/after — not subtle hydration
When to combine
The strategic combination most of my regulars use looks like this:
- Month 1: Hydrafacial Deluxe — assess skin, hydrate, prep barrier
- Month 2: First VI Peel
- Month 3: Hydrafacial (helps soothe between peels and maintains barrier)
- Month 4: Second VI Peel
- Month 5: Hydrafacial
- Month 6: Third VI Peel — full results visible weeks 7–8
This rhythm gives you the steady benefits of resurfacing without the aggressive look of back-to-back peels.
When one is wrong for you
VI Peel is wrong if:
- You have an event or vacation in the next 10 days
- You have active cold sores (we'd pre-treat with antivirals first)
- You're pregnant or breastfeeding (we wait)
- You've used isotretinoin (Accutane) within 6 months
- You can't commit to strict sun avoidance for 14 days post-peel
Hydrafacial may be a wasted spend if:
- Your primary concern is dark spots or significant hyperpigmentation — it won't move the needle
- Your skin is already well-managed and you want bigger results — go to peel or microneedling
- You have severe rosacea actively flaring (the suction can aggravate it)
FAQ
What's the main difference between Hydrafacial and VI Peel?
Hydrafacial is hydrating with no downtime — great before an event. VI Peel is a medical-grade chemical peel that visibly peels for 5–7 days, then reveals significantly improved tone. Different problems, different timelines.
Which is better for hyperpigmentation or melasma?
VI Peel, easily. A series of 3 spaced 4 weeks apart is the standard plan for stubborn pigmentation.
Can I get a Hydrafacial before a wedding?
Yes — schedule it 24–48 hours before. Hydrafacial is the gold standard for event prep because there's zero downtime. VI Peel should be at least 10 days out.
Is VI Peel safe for darker skin tones?
Yes. VI Peel is one of the few medical-grade peels safe and effective for Fitzpatrick I–VI. Hydrafacial is safe for all skin tones too.
How much do they cost in Marietta?
Hydrafacial starts around $199 (Signature) and scales to $299 (Platinum). VI Peel is typically $300–$400 per treatment with package pricing for a series of three. CareCredit financing is available.
